We have been to some really nice spots during our search, but in all of the experiences we enjoyed, each one was missing one or more of the key ingredients that we all agreed as being absolutely necessary in order for all of us to be totally satisfied and content. Each of the three spots are fairly quiet, and have accommodations ranging from the height of luxury all the way through to the backpackers spots to offer something for all budgets and make this quaint, beautiful location in Thailand accessible for all to experience. Actually if you like the more quiet side of things while on holiday then Khao Lak is not only somewhere that is perfect as a family holiday spot, but also for anyone who is wanting to unwind and relax in nature, and in my opinion it makes for the ideal honeymoon location as there are many attractions that are impressive and interesting, while not too flashy and intrusive. If you want to go and Khao Lak at an especially quiet time of year then I would advise going during the low season months which are from April-November.

The Accommodation

Like I mentioned earlier in this post; there are accommodations to suit all budgets and cater for most tastes and requirements in a place to lay their head. We opted for renting a villa within a resort as we know from experience that this will make our lives easier with their being staff on all during most hours to support us with whatever we needed. Also we like the privacy you get with a villa while still having a resort swimming pool, bar, restaurant and in this specific case – a Kids Club, which suited us perfectly. So during the days we could leave the children to enjoy themselves with whatever the Kids Club had organized for that day, while my wife and I would go off on our scooter or on a guided tour to explore the nearby attractions and places of interest – which there are many. The Villa also had a stunning sea view over the beach that according to local people had the best, most beautiful sunset in the province. The beach is your ideal, soft, sandy type and the sea water is warm and as clear as can be, actually scuba diving is known to be quite enjoyable in this area as there is lots of sea life and many interesting things to see. So if you enjoying diving, then be sure to book some fun dives when visiting Khao Lak.

If you have a child who is involved in travel sports like hockey, basketball or soccer, you know you spend a lot of time in hotels. There are games, there are tournaments and probably the whole team (if not multiple teams) are all housed at the same hotel. That makes for a lot of kids. It's great because you get to hang out with the other parents, the kids get to hang out with their friends and camps, but there should be limits placed on what the kids can do in and around the hotel.

For instance, no other guest appreciates a gang of kids running down hallways hollering at the top of their lungs. If you do not let your kids run around like that at home, why are they doing it at a hotel? Another thing that ticks off other guests is that the quiet times are not upheld. Just because you're away from home does not mean you can act out at all times of the day or night.

Being in a hotel is a freedom, parents can go to the restaurant or bar while the kids go in the pool, but this too is tricky as kids should always be supervised around water, no matter their age. Even if parents take turns on pool duty, it's better than no supervision at all. Ideally, the kids should behaving properly in the pool area which means no running, no diving into shallow water and observing the pool rules. Same goes for the gym or fitness center if the hotel has one. This is for all guests to use, and if your child has a legitimate reason to be there, supervised then that's great, but having a bunch of kids hanging out in the gym annoying other guests is a no no.

For the most part, kids and hotels are a great mix, and families are attentive of the rules, the kids are polite and quiet and all is well, it's when they area allowed to run amok that the problems arise. No one wants to be the one getting kicked out of a hotel so hide by the rules for fun for all.

The experts say that once you get into your room, the first thing you should do is check for bedbugs. Hopefully you do not find any, but if you do, that's your cue to get out of there as soon as possible. Notify the front desk so they can do something about it.

Once you're sure you're bedbug free, make sure the WiFi and heating / cooling system is working like it should. Connect, breathe, check out the heat. If all is well, you're on your way to a comfortable stay, but just to make sure you are not going to get sick from germs the last guest left, wipe all surfaces, knobs, buttons and the remote to the TV with antibacterial wipes. It's just good sense and it will protect you while giving you peace of mind that all is as clean as it should be.

Another major 'do' when staying in a hotel is to take note of your near exit. This information can be found on the door to the room and will be necessary should an emergency occurs during your stay.

And now for the don'ts. The number one rule of staying in a hotel is never to leave your luggage unattended in the lobby, and never to leave expensive items out in plain view in your room. It's not your house, people can go into your room at any time, keep those valuables where you know they're safe. In the safe, or on your person at all times.

Do not take food from the minibar unless you want to be charged an exorbinant amount of money for it! Leave it alone or face the charges. Also, never give your room number out to strangers, do not open the door to anyone unless you are expecting them and do not allow 'staff' who have no identification into your room. It's just common sense.

The real staff at a hotel would really like if it you avoided from stealing linens, towels and other items from the room. They also appreciate you not smoking in a non-smoking room. Play by the rules and it's fun for all.
